BellSouth develops a lot of valuable, innovative technology for use in its business. BellSouth Intellectual Property Marketing Corporation (BIPMARK) is the exclusive entity for licensing “out” BellSouth technology to other companies.
There are two common technology licensing scenarios where BIPMARK helps BellSouth meet its goals:
First, BellSouth employees are very innovative and develop a lot of valuable technology. BellSouth also hires vendors to develop a lot of this technology. In either case, BIPMARK can work either directly with potential end user customers or with a distribution partner to take the technology to market. BellSouth also sometimes “barters” with a vendor who may have helped develop the technology and desires a license to the technology.
A second scenario occurs when an employee visualizes enhancements to a vendor's product which will improve it to meet BellSouth’s needs. The improvements may even make the vendor’s product much more marketable in general. BIPMARK will work with the vendor of the “core” product to negotiate fair value for the innovation which improves or extends the vendor’s core product.
These cooperative approaches are intended to produce a “win-win” result for BellSouth and its customers/vendors, and have resulted in many valuable licensing transactions. As a result, BellSouth receives significant additional value from its technology investments through BIPMARK.
